Urquhart Castle Urquhart Castle

Urquhart Castle, near Drumnadrochit on the A82 is one of Scotland's most dramatic medieval fortresses, standing amidst spectacular Highland scenery and overlooking Loch Ness. Once one of Scotland's mightiest strongholds, Urquhart's strategic location gave it a key role in the Scottish battle for independence. It came under the control of Robert the Bruce before a 150-year power struggle between the Stewart dynasty and the MacDonald Lords of the Isles. The castle's history and that of the noble families – Durward, Macdonald and Grant – who held it, is told in the exhibition and audio-visual display in the modern visitor centre. The visitor centre also features an outstanding array of medieval artefacts found at the castle.

Urquhart Castle is fascinating to explore and provides a vision of life during the Middle Ages, both in war and peace. The most dramatic building is the 16th-century five-storey Grant Tower where the lords and their families lived and entertained their guests. Other parts of the castle include the kitchens, guardhouse and cellars. You can also see where the once mighty defences kept the enemies at bay.

Urquhart Castle's visitor centre is modern and well-equipped. Set back into the hillside, it looks out over the castle ruins, the waters of Loch Ness and the mountains beyond. Visitors can enjoy an exciting film in six languages which describes the castle's turbulent history. There is also a scale model of the castle and the chance to see artefacts found at the castle in the 1920s, including gunstones, arrowheads and the beautiful Urquhart Ewer. The visitor centre has a comfortable café selling hot and cold snacks and a selection of delicious home baking. Picnic packs are available for those who wish to eat outside. There is also a shop selling a selection of quality books souvenirs and gifts. Open all year, seven days a week.

Tickets - Adult 7.00, Child £4.20, Concession £5.60 - No booking fee.

Please print out the receipt that will be e-mailed to you and present it at the Castle ticket office for admission.
